We take on one or two garden design projects each year, primarily across New England. Our work begins with what is already there: the character of the land, the plants that want to grow, and the ways a place changes from season to season and year to year. Rather than impose a garden upon a landscape, we look for what it might become.
Plants are at the heart of this process. We draw from the living library we grow at Spring Road, bringing rare, unusual, and often overlooked species into gardens where they can move, seed, mingle, and change over time. Structure gives the garden its shape, but we leave room for spontaneity, succession, and the unexpected.
Many of our projects unfold over several years. We think of a garden not as something to finish, but as something to set in motion, then observe and care for as it finds its own character.
